WASHINGTON D.C. Due to internal brake fluid leaks that can cause an electrical short and could lead to engine fires, Hyundai and Kia are recalling a total of 3.37 million vehicles in the U.S.
They also advised owners to park outside and away from structures until repairs are done.
Owners should follow the automakers' warning and park vehicles outside until repairs are completed, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) said.
The NHTSA added that neither automaker reported any injuries, fatalities, or crashes related to the recalls.
Hyundai said that since 2017, it has received reports of 21 fires and 21 other thermal incidents connected to the recall, while Kia has confirmed at least 10 fires and related incidents.
A filing with the NHTSA showed that Kia's recall covers 1.73 million Borrego, Cadenza, Forte, Sportage, K900, Optima, Soul Rio, Sorento, and Rondo vehicles from model years 2010 to 2017.
Hyundai is recalling 1.64 million Elantra, Genesis Coupe, Sonata Hybrid, Accent, Azera, Veloster, Santa Fe, Equus, Veracruz, Tucson, Tucson Fuel Cell, and Santa Fe Sport vehicles from model years 2011 to 2015, the filing added.
The NHTSA said that Hyundai will notify owners to bring the affected vehicles to dealers while Kia is still working on a solution.
